“My pencil, my voice”

Amalia, 27 from Spain. Participant in the Youth Exchange “Illustrating Equality: Comics for Change”, hosted by Cazalla Intercultural in Alicante, Spain.

The reason I joined this project…

..was to explore how comics can be a powerful tool to raise awareness about hate speech, microaggressions, and discrimination. As someone passionate about communication and creativity, the idea of mixing art and activism immediately clicked with me. I knew this experience would be both meaningful and inspiring — and I was right.

During the exchange…

We spent 9 intense and unforgettable days creating characters, crafting stories, and turning powerful ideas into full comic strips. The goal? Break stereotypes and promote equality through visual storytelling.
Beyond the art, it was about people. I met young folks from all over Europe, each with unique stories and backgrounds. Thanks to the amazing team of youth leaders and facilitators, we built a safe and creative space where everyone felt free to express themselves.

One of the moments that stuck with me the most? Realising how even a simple drawing can carry a strong social message. It made me think differently about how I use visuals in my own work.

This was my first time in Alicante…

…and I completely fell in love with the city, its vibe, and the energy of the group. We didn’t just learn and draw — we also connected, laughed, explored, and created memories I’ll never forget.

And guess what?

This opportunity was entirely free, thanks to Erasmus+. If you’re between 13 and 30 and living in Europe, there are so many projects like this waiting for you. Don’t hesitate — apply, travel, create, and grow.
