European
Solidarity Corps

The European Solidarity Corps is an initiative funded by the European Union: it succeeds the former European Voluntary Service by offering a wider range of opportunities. Young people between 18 and 30 years old who have the nationality of one of the member countries of the European Union, or of a partner country, can apply for missions lasting from 2 to 12 months.

The themes of these missions are varied, including the environment, culture, health, and digital technology, but always linked to a form of solidarity and sharing. This program brings three main pillars together: experiences of working abroad, experiences of solidarity projects and, the most important to us, experiences of volunteering abroad. It is a slightly revised and improved version of what was previously called the European Voluntary Service until 2018, because while the project itself of sending young people abroad for volunteer missions still exists, the available experiences have been enriched.

As an individual volunteer, you could do a 2 to 12 month assignment in a European Union country, or a "partner" country (e.g. Norway, Serbia or Russia), within an association or organisation that has been approved by the program and is actively benefiting it’s local community. As far as the missions are concerned, they are very diverse: there are volunteers in almost every conceivable field. You can find volunteer missions in the field of international relations at the University of Copenhagen or in an animal shelter in Moldova for example.

For the practical aspect: as a volunteer you would work full time, 30-38 hours per week, and get 2 days off per month. These volunteer opportunities are accessible to all, thanks to the fact that the program covers the costs including roundtrip transportation, insurance, accommodation on site, and food shopping for example. No diploma is required to join; only motivation counts.

The program offers additional missions as well:

- Team volunteering: Groups of 10 to 40 volunteers, including those with fewer opportunities, from at least two different countries, who wish to carry out a volunteering assignment together lasting between 2 weeks and 2 months.
- Solidarity Projects: Initiatives led by a minimum of 5 young people legally residing in the same country, who want to propose a solidarity project to make a positive change in their local community. These projects last between 2 and 12 months, and participants receive €500 per month for project costs.

Good to know

If you are doing a volunteer mission, you are provided with language support, training, and online coaching. Your travel costs to and from the project location are covered as well.
